Hi, I'm Mike Kettering, Product Manager for Electronic Valves at Clippard. What does hit and hold mean in regards to an electronic valve? The general principal behind a hit and hold circuit is that the valve is energized to full power for a short period of time before dropping the voltage and current to a specified level. In a typical hit and hold circuit, the hit is at the standard, rated voltage for a specified amount of time and the hold is typically 50% or less of that rated voltage.

Some of the benefits of using a hit and hold circuit can include lower power consumption, less heat generation, and even longer life out of your valve. By reducing the voltage and current to the valve, the power consumed by the valve is inherently reduced. When the power applied to the valve is reduced, the heat generated from the coil is also reduced. Applications that are sensitive to heat rise can greatly benefit from hit and hold circuits. High cycle rate as well as low temperature applications can be ideal also. In some applications, hit and hold can actually extend the life of the valve.
